Benefits of Writing - Part I

Updated: May 24, 2019

cultivate forgiveness, persevere in life.

Writing is defined as art, an individual’s style of forming words, sentences, and texts. And like every piece of art, creative is one of the central characters and aspect of it. Writing allows us to create realities beyond understanding, to express ourselves in ways we cannot expect or explain. The feelings involved in writing are from indescribable character, and that makes writing a magical tool for recreating and creating.

Writing is a wonderful practice. It allows the human brain to relax, to focus, and to expand our emotional state; it makes dreams become real and, in some cases, allows exacerbation. Writing is responsible for mental health, and its exercising might enable people to alter their state of consciousness, allowing them to feel more instead of thinking more. This art has a symbiotic effect within the self or a person, for when we write, we are being present of a simultaneous interaction regarding observing and taking action. It helps conduct thoughts and intentions meaningfully and creatively.

Something I would like to share with you is a good way of putting into practice this. I want to introduce you into one very simple exercise that you can start practicing NOW and see how this might influence your opinions towards people or situations.

For instance, you can write a story based in a sad or even in a happy ending experience of your life. Let’s firstly think of a situation which you are not comfortable with. This experience might involve other people or just only yourself. Basically, you can recreate the story the way you want. As an example, you can describe a different place, more comfortable weather, more people involved, etc.. This experience of recreating will provide you an improvement of your creativity mechanism, your emotional reaction and a (re)view of different possible endings. I wish to remark that the intention of this exercise is not to abstract the reality behind the scene but to allow you to establish different emotional states within yourself through this recreated situation. That will enable you to filter out some harsh aspects and put more emphasis on others more benevolent for yourself. In other words, it is about unfolding your emotions and write them down the way you perceive them, to heal those aspects that require a different kind of affection and attention.

While writing, you exercise to project yourself onto both the aggressor and affected part in your story. This can automatically create a condition for a better understanding of his/her/their and your feelings. Please, bear in mind not to let yourself drag back down and remember that this recreated story allows you now to better reflect on any desired personal issue. The assembling of the story is to describe your emotions throughout the experience better and see how a different emotional reaction of yourself might provide a better resolving of it. When we write, we are involved in the story from a different perspective, and this is the positive aspect of what I wish to remark as a result of this.

Once you have finished the story, read it, reflect upon it, and perceive the emotions that the recreation is now making possible. You might see yourself above the situation, not experience it directly and probably no taking part in it anymore. But instead, you will observe what it means to be the aggressor and the victim; you will have now a consideration for both sides. Consideration implies awareness. This exercise attempts to the aim of being more empathetic, sensitive, and benevolent with ourselves. Once you see a situation from above, you will be able to understand better and, eventually, forgive what happened. You might acknowledge that sometimes things happen for a reason and we don't necessarily have to take it personally, we don't need to victimize ourselves any longer. You will get a better feeling about acceptance and respect regarding some decisions. It might help you release the weight you have been carrying due to that issue. Never forget that your personal story always matters to somebody else. We might not be aware of whom, but yes, many others are looking for inspiration, for a reason to progress in life, and you can show them a different way to go, a route that might lead them to an unexpected situation, to an unexpected end and new beginning. When we forgive ourselves, we are more likely to forgive others and establish relationships based on acceptance, unconditionality, and fewer compromises.

If this has helped you, try now with a happy ending story and see how beautiful it is to experience through writing thousand of similar moments based on the same situation. See how beautiful it is to see yourself experiencing positive emotions again and again. This exercise will show you that there is no only one way to be happy, but thousand and more. And the next time you face a similar encounter or situation, never forget that you are the writer of your own story, your journey.

I wish you beautiful writing and a better understanding of yourself.
